Refugees whom just arrived in the Netherlands are flabbergasted: so many people on bikes! Here everyone needs a bike. Therefore, it is important for the refugees to learn to cycle. This way they will become independent. Every Tuesday morning at AZC cycling lessons are organized for the (mostly female) residence. As a volunteer you will help them to learn to cycle. For some it will be the first time they are on a bike. While others have come to the lessons a few times and already know their way around. Besides that the lessons are educational, it gives the residence also a reason to get some exercise and fresh air. Is this something you would like to do? Sign up soon!
Most residence of AZC have been in the Netherlands shortly and they are still becoming accustomed to and getting to know the Dutch culture. One of the notable culture differences is that everyone is always cycling. By learning how to ride a bike, the refugees will be able to transport themselves better. On top of this, the lessons are also a social event. The people that come together, are from all over the world, like Syria, Eritrea and other different African countries. They work hard to learn to cycle.
The lessons are given at the AZC in Rijswijk. AZC houses refugees whom are in anticipation of their application for asylum or waiting for a house. The AZC Rijswijk has around 400 residence. Besides the cycling lessons, they also organize Dutch lessons, and they have a school for the children.
