Seven days a week homeless center Blaka Watra welcomes the homeless people of Amsterdam. As a volunteer you are responsible for the coffee corner: Throughout your shift you make sure there is enough coffee and tea and of course there is plenty of time to talk to the visitors. During the weekend the visitors also receive a hot meal, so you will also help handing out the meals. Your help is very welcome and it is a nice way to learn more about the lives of homeless people.

Target group

Homeless center Blaka Watra from the Regenboog Groep is situated in the city center, right next to Central Station. The visitors of Blaka Watra have a lot of different nationalities and are mainly male visitors. Please note: it's allowed to smoke inside! Besides, Blaka Watra allows visitors to use drugs in one of their rooms in order to prevent the visitors from using it in unsafe ways and unsafe places at the streets. The organization gladly tells you more about this. At Blaka Watra visitors can enjoy coffee, tea, take a shower, use a computer, exchange clothes and meat others.  Only some of them are homeless. Most of the visitors They are visiting Blaka Watra for socializing, a warm meal, a shower or for practical help.

The visitors of homeless centers do not necessarily live on the streets. Some of them do have a home, but are socially isolated. They visit the homeless centers to meet others, a warm meal, a shower or practical help. The life stories of these people, often makes them interesting interlocutors. Please keep in mind that most of the visitors are male and most of the time you are the one who must take the first step to make contact. If you like to know more about this target group, please look at the detailed description of homeless people.
